Fate/Unlimited Codes: Another Holy Grail War

Fate/Unlimited Codes is a fighting game for the PlayStation 2 based on Fate/Stay Night, a visual novel written by Kinoko Nasu and designed by Takashi Tekeuchi of Type-Moon.
● Story

The Holy Grail War, a bloody tournament that revolves around an all-powerful treasure that will grant its wielder a miracle, the Holy Grail. To be granted the right to wield it, seven magi must each summon their own heroic spirit and engage in a battle royal to eliminate the unworthy and become the last man standing.

● Information

Fate/Unlimited Codes is a fighting game for the PlayStation 2 based on Fate/Stay Night, a visual novel written by Kinoko Nasu and designed by Takashi Tekeuchi of Type-Moon. This game however is developed by Eighting and Capcom, the same companies that brought us "Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds." Although this is based on the story and settings of Fate/Stay Night, this game is not considered canon to the franchise and is therefore treated as a spinoff.

● Characters

Shirou Emiya (CV: Noriaki Sugiyama)
The main protagonist and Saber's Master. He has the special ability to create any sword he have seen before, this allows him to replicate a Servant's legendary weapon and its effect at will.
Saber (CV: Ayako Kawasumi)
Shirou's Servant. A heroic spirit that specializes in close-range combat. This is the same Saber that participated in the 4th Holy Grail War in Fate/Zero. Also known as the Warrior King.
Saber Lily (CV: Ayako Kawasumi)
Shirou's Servant and Saber's alternate costume. A white knight with the ferocity of a lion and the elegance of a blooming flower.
Rin Tohsaka (CV: Kana Ueda)
Archer's Master. A talented magus capable of storing magical energy into gemstones which she can release later to cause explosions that could match ancient sorcery.
Archer (CV: Junichi Suwabe)
Rin's Servant. A heroic spirit that specializes in long-ranged combat by firing projectiles at the enemy. Although archers usually attacks from a distance, this Archer seems to be capable of fighting in close-ranged combat with a sword.
Sakura Matou (CV: Noriko Shitaya)
Rin's younger sister who was adopted by the Matou family. Her link with the corrupted Grail caused her to invert and transform into a dark witch capable of harnessing a miracle.
Rider (CV: Yu Asakawa)
Sakura's Servant. A heroic spirit that specializes in riding a mount to attack the enemy. Her eyes could turn living creatures to stone, anyone who could resist it would slow down considerably.
Saber Alter (CV: Ayako Kawasumi)
Saber's inverted form. Corrupted by the darkness under Sakura's influence, she has become a cold weapon capable of destroying anything in her path.
Kirei Kotomine (CV: George Nakata)
Gilgamesh's Master from the former war and Lancer's Master in the current war. He became the moderator of the Holy Grail War by disposing the real moderator, and taking her place.
Gilgamesh (CV: Tomokazu Seki)
Kirei's Archer-class Servant that survived the last war . He's an arrogant bastard who claims to own everything. He possesses a huge amount of legendary weapons at his disposal which makes him the strongest adversary in the story.
Lancer (CV: Nobutoshi Canna)
Kirei's Servant. A heroic spirit that specializes in the use of spears and lances. His spear reverses cause-and-effect which allows him to pierce through the target's heart with absolute accuracy.
Caster (CV: Atsuko Tanaka)
Assassin's Master. A heroic spirit that specializes in the use of ancient magical arts and rituals. Being a magus herself, she broke the rules of the Holy Grail War and summoned her own Servant.
Assassin (CV: Shinichiro Miki)
Caster's Servant. A heroic spirit that specializes in stealth missions and silent assassinations. Because he was summoned by Caster through a loophole in the Grail's system, he's technically not an assassin but more like a samurai.
Leysritt (CV: Miho Miyakawa)
A homunculus made to serve Ilyasviel von Eizbern. A maid who can wield a giant halberd with ease and is capable of materializing the holy garment, the Heaven's Feel.
Berserker (CV: Tadahisa Saizen)
Ilyasviel's Servant. A heroic spirit that is granted enormous strength at the cost of sanity. This Servant-class is the hardest to manage as it requires a lot of magical energy to maintain but Ilya can easily tame him because of her talent. With godly strength and an immunity to almost all kinds of attacks, this giant is but a walking tank to be feared.
Bazett Fraga Mcremitz (CV: Hitomi Nabatame)
Lancer's original Master before Kirei took her command spell. She fights by reinforcing her limbs with magical energy so she can match enemies with legendary weapons. She have a weapon herself but it can only be used under a special condition.
Luviagelita Edelfelt (CV: Shizuka Itou)
A descendant of the Edelfelt family, who participated in the 3rd Holy Grail War. She seems to have the same talent as Rin and is also capable of storing magical energy into gemstones and detonating it later like a bomb.
Zero Lancer (CV: Hikaru Midorikawa)
Kayneth's Servant. A heroic spirit that specializes in the use of spears and lances. Dual-wields two spears at once; One prevents regeneration while the other severs magical enchantment and contracts. Technically, he's not supposed to be in this timeline because he died during the 4th war but screw the story we need more guest characters.

● Music

The song used on the main menu and the promotional video is titled "Code" by Sachi Tainaka. She's the same artist who performed the opening song for Fate/Stay Night, titled "Disillusion".

● Grail Combo Exhibition

Here's the combo video that I planned to post earlier to celebrate having 100,000 visitors but because it's too late now, I wrote this long post for this game instead.

● Portable Version

Capcom ported this game to the PlayStation Portable under the title "Fate/Unlimited Codes Portable". I don't recommend it though, if you're gonna play this game go with the PS2 version because the Portable version just sucks major balls. Here's what they did:
  • They made the commands easier to compensate for the PSP's lack of joystick goodness which made it noob friendly but those who played the PS2 version will have to adjust to the new commands.
  • Grail EX Moves inflicts double the damage which enables you to kill almost anything easily. Grail moves in the PS2 version usually inflicts 4000 damage while the PSP version inflicts around 8000 damage. Characters with the lowest health have 8000 HP so this move alone could kill them instantly.
  • The AI got nerfed which makes it a cakewalk even under the hardest difficulty. Randomly mashing the buttons would reward you with victory. The PS2's AI will combo you to death until you're dead.
  • Since the PSP is not as powerful as a PS2, the graphics got toned down a lot but they added extra costumes for the characters as new content. So it's not all bad.
● Final words

If you are too lazy to read the whole post, just watch the video and then comment.
Thank you.

Lovely post with good introduction of the characters and a summary, as always :), hey I'd like to ask you for some more ecchi, have any recommendations? I've played this game before, it was neat, but it could've been a little bit better. Capcom surely could've executed it better.

The game looks pretty fun actually. I wouldn't mind giving it a go.
Also Berserker reminded me of Blanka from Street Fighter, although it's totally unrelated hahaha

The character designs seem kind of lacking

@Fang
Yes, I recorded and edited the video myself but it wasn't me who did all that combo stuff, it was all the godly CPU.

@neatfit
What kind of ecchi are we talking about? I'll have to think about that.

@Hasidic Plumber
Well, Blanka is from another Capcom game too so it's not completely unrelated.

@Shaw
I love the character designs actually, but if I had to nitpick I'd say that the 3D models lacked some details.

You don't need to apologize, it's not like you did something wrong.

Looks like a standard 2D fighting game to me. Can't say I'm terribly interested.
